Winterizing Plumbing Pipes

Winterizing Plumbing Pipes

Winterizing plumbing pipes helps save money in the long run. With a simple process your outdoor plumbing stays protected from harsh winter elements. We have outlined the process for an easy DIY project.

Use A Pipe Sleeve

Using a pipe sleeve is the fastest way to cover outdoor pipes. This insulated sleeve comes with a slit up the side for easy installation onto the pipe itself. You can cut the sleeve to fit the pipe when needed. Please note that the sleeve usually does not cover the entire pipe. You will see a little bit of the pipe from the open side of the sleeve.

Tape the Sleeve

To secure the pipe sleeve, use heat tape. Wrapping the tape around the sleeve to achieve full coverage is the best option. This tape will keep any heat inside the pipe and usually prevent freezing. While freezing can always occur, this method helps prevent damage.

After installing the pipe sleeve and the heat tape, we like to cover the ends of the heat tape with electrical tape. This secures the ends of the heat tape so it won’t come loose. We have also seen duct tape be used to cover the heat tape but that’s personal preference.

Checking the Pipes

During winter we always recommend checking outside pipes for leaks. Even though we’re winterizing plumbing pipes , there is still a possibility of freezing depending on the outside temperatures. In addition to checking the pipes, a quick walk around your home may identify any water issues.

Drain Maintenance In Las Vegas

Drain Maintenance in Las Vegas

Drain maintenance in Las Vegas can be tricky because of the hard water. Mineral build up can cause drain clogs as easily as putting unwanted items in the drain. When on a job, we always provide the benefit of the doubt before inspecting a drain. Below are a few tips on what not to put down the drain.

Please Don’t Put These In The Drain

A few items we should never put down the drain are eggshells, coffee grounds, fruit rinds, vegetable stalks and medications. While it may seem like the place to put them, the drain doesn’t always take kindly to these items. When placed in there repeatedly, not only does a drain clog occur, sometimes there is a gas build up leading to odor coming from the drain.

Medications should never be flushed down the toilet or placed in the drain. Once flushed, they go directly into the water supply. The EPA (environmental protection agency) has a way to dispose of unwanted or expired medications, Click here for details

Keeping A Drain Clean

When a drain does have an odor or you have cleared a clogged drain, it’s a good idea to clean the drain thoroughly. This can be done by using the hottest water possible to loosen up debris and build up. We also recommend a little bit of baking soda followed by a bit of vinegar. Cleaning the drain regularly with these simple tips will help keep the water flowing all year long.
